Skyline Plaza gets the sustainability gold

The planned Skyline Plaza is the first shopping centre in Frankfurt to get a German Sustainable Building Council provisional gold certificate. The certificate will be presented by the German Sustainable Building Council in the presence of Frankfurt’s head of planning, Edwin Schwarz, at the Expo Real 2010.

The shopping centre that is planned for Frankfurt’s new Europaviertel  district by property company Vivico in collaboration with shopping centre specialists ECE was today awarded the best possible provisional certificate from the German Sustainable Building Council. “With the Skyline Plaza we wanted to not only create attractive shopping opportunities, but also to set an environmental example", explains Alexander Otto, Chairman of the board at ECE. Vivico’s Chairman of the Board, Bernhard H. Hansen, believes the Europaviertel in Frankfurt is developing into a truly sustainable city quarter: “With the Tower 185 block, located opposite, we are already constructing a Green Building, and we are continuing our philosophy of sustainability jointly with ECE in the Skyline Plaza".

The provisional gold certificate was achieved by putting together a variety of different measures, ranging from natural ventilation systems in the Skyline Plaza, which save large amounts of energy whilst still providing high levels of comfort, to use of rain water, to over 170 bike spaces.

Yet this gold certification comes into play even during the planning and building process. Among other advantages the Skyline Plaza has been planned barrier-free, during construction recycling systems are being used and the building work is being done exclusively with non-harmful and environmentally-friendly construction materials.

The Skyline Plaza will offer over 38,000 m² (409,000 square feet) of retail space for around 170 shops, an approximately 8,500 m² (91,500 sq ft) fitness and leisure area and  4,500 m² (48,500 sq ft) of restaurant space. One of the particular features of the Skyline Plaza is a large roof garden covering over 11,000 m² (118,000 sq ft) with additional facilities that remain usable throughout the year.

On the current state of the project Hansen remarked: “We have now submitted the building proposal for the Skyline Plaza and we are using the Expo Real trade fair to speak to possible co-investors about the project”.

ECE will be exhibiting the model of the Skyline Plaza at the Expo Real trade fair in Munich until 6 October; the ECE trade stand is in hall B2, stand 340. In addition, the Skyline Plaza can be seen as part of the larger town planning context in a model on the Frankfurt city stand.
