Europacity Berlin: CA Immo completes new InterCityHotel at Berlin’s central station

CA Immo today handed over the new InterCityHotel Berlin Hauptbahnhof (InterCityHotel Berlin Central Station) to the Steigenberger Group after a construction period lasting almost two years.

CA Immo has created the four-star hotel to turnkey standard. Steigenberger has concluded a long-term rental agreement with CA Immo. CA Immo’s investment in this building amounts to around 53 million euros

Henrik Thomsen, Group Head of Development at CA Immo: “The InterCityHotel Berlin Haupt-bahnhof represents the completion of another high-quality key project in this central location in Berlin – after the Tour Total. In August we laid the cornerstone for the John F. Kennedy Haus (John F. Kennedy Building) in direct proximity, and in spring 2014 Steigenberger will open another first-class hotel in this location. The dynamic nature of this development shows us that the site and Europacity are now of high relevance both for investors and for users.”

The InterCityHotel, situated on Katharina-Paulus-Straße, has 412 rooms spread over a total of eight floors. The hotel building, designed by Reichel + Stauth and conceived as a green building, has around 213,125 ft² of gross floor space in total and was realised in line with the latest standards and taking into account strict sustainability criteria. The aim is to achieve certification as a green building in the highest category “Gold” from the DGNB (German Sustainable Building Council). The new hotel in the upper mid-range segment is the new “flagship” of the InterCityHotel brand for the Steigenberger Group.

The hotel is part of a building complex on Washingtonplatz, a square right by Berlin’s central station and the bend in the River Spree. Alongside the InterCityHotel and the Steigenberger Hotel as well as the already completed Meininger Hotel, the construction of the John F. Kennedy Haus and another building will see the creation of two additional high-quality office buildings.

Background information: Development of Europacity quarter

The Europacity quarter will be divided into two areas by Heidestrasse, which will be transformed into a landscaped boulevard. The boulevard will be flanked by office and business buildings, but away from the main road – in particular in the area around the Berlin-Spandau shipping canal – high-quality residential apartments will be constructed. An urban design competition was held for the development zone in early 2008. Its results were incorporated into a master plan, which was adopted by the Berlin Senate in May of 2009. Large parks and green spaces, a promenade by the canal and a centrally located harbour basin will also guarantee a high standard of living. With the Kunst-Campus (Arts Cam-pus), consisting of the Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum for Contemporary Art, the Rieckhallen with the Friedrich Christian Flick Collection, the galleries in the Halle am Wasser (Hall by the Water), public exhibition spaces and many artists’ studios, the first project component has already been implemented.
