Arnulfpark® in Munich gets a new city square

Munich, 17 April 2007 Munich’s newest urban district is getting a new city square. The real estate company Vivico will begin construction and landscaping of the 2,500 m2 Rainer-Werner-Fassbinder-Platz in Arnulfpark ® on 18 April 2007.

The first step will be to plant a honeylocust tree (Gleditsia triacanthos) that is already 12 metres high and 30 years old. In a second phase, the area around the mighty tree will be landscaped during the summer months. The Bavarian artist Wilhelm Koch will then install an “asphalt lake” there. This centrally located sculpture will consist of several layers of asphalt and will form the focus of the new urban square. The asphalt lake will be approximately 300 m2 in size and deep black in colour and will create an impressive contrast with the surrounding light beige pavement. This work of art will be accessible to pedestrians. Names of films, plays and radio dramas created by Rainer-Werner Fassbinder and quotations from his work will be stamped in the asphalt and will enable visitors to relate to the famous person for whom the square is named.
The newly designed square is scheduled to be completed in September 2007. This is also when the theatre in the former power plant directly adjacent to the Rainer-Werner-Fassbinder-Platz will open its doors.
