Foundation stone laid for ZigZag office building

CA Immo is celebrating the next milestone in Mainz's Zollhafen quarter: Today, together with Lord Mayor Michael Ebling, Officer for Economic Affairs Manuela Matz and Planning Officer Marianne Grosse, the foundation stone for the ZigZag office building was laid. Completion of the building with a leasable area of approx. 4,000 m² is planned for the end of 2020. CA Immo’s investment is around 16 million euros in total.

In his welcoming address, Lord Mayor Ebling emphasised: "ZigZag is an exciting project for the Mainz office space market. It is an efficient building in a modern design that will be realised here in the North of Mainz's new urban quarter, located right next to Rhine harbour basin. An ambitious office concept, which makes good use of the special nature of the maritime location and combines a living environment with a working one. The property will be a part of the customs and inland harbour, whose growth we will follow over the next few years as the biggest and most significant urban development project in the city. A next step in a new urban quarter, which will be the envy of many other cities."

Michael Morgan, CEO of CA Immo Deutschland: "As co-developer of the Zollhafen project, we are naturally thrilled with every building block that brings the quarter a step further forward. At the same time, the ZigZag is the first office building that we have erected in Mainz – naturally, we applied our very high standards to this project with regard to sustainable and forward-looking building development. Correspondingly, the ZigZag addresses an innovative target group, whose particular desire is to realise modern, communication-focused office concepts."

The ZigZag will be a modern, pioneering place of work in a prominent waterside location at the northern tip of the basin. Across a leasable area of approx. 4,000 m² and six floors, the building proposed by MVRDV (Rotterdam) in cooperation with morePlatz (Berlin) not only offers maximum spatial flexibility, but also innovative solutions for room control. The light or room temperature, for example, can thus be easily controlled via app. This simultaneously waives the need for costly wiring, thus sparing our natural resources. The spatial concept for the block building envisions a mixture of meeting and communication zones and closed office and private, reflective places. The area structure has been conceived in such a way so as to allow the realisation of both compartmentalised and large-scale applications.

The office building is easily accessible, located directly at the "Zollhafen" tram stop. In addition, all major motorway connections in the Rhine-Main area can be quickly reached by drivers. In the direct vicinity of the building a hotel will also be built, along with a garage for the quarter with a total of 400 parking spaces, which can be used by the ZigZag's tenants. In addition, the building has over 50 bicycle stands.

Zigzag is a further contribution from CA Immo to the overall development of the Zollhafen quarter. CA Immo is developing the extensive, approx. 30-hectare Zollhafen quarter together with Mainz's public utility companies. As well as developing the quarter, CA Immo is also responsible for realising its own projects in Zollhafen. Most recently, CA Immo completed an extensive residential and commercial building on Rheinallee comprising around 18,500 m² of rental space and handed it over to investor Aberdeen Standard Investments Deutschland AG. Alongside over 180 dwellings, the building also houses a seven-group day care facility and a large supermarket. In this way, the building takes on an important role for the entire quarter and the neighbouring new town.

This same year, CA Immo is also planning to start on the construction of around 50 apartments and approximately 3,000 m² of office space on the "Hafeninsel V" site in Zollhafen Mainz. In 2020, we will see the beginning of construction work for another 90 or so apartments on the “Hafeninsel IV” site. CA Immo is developing and realising these two projects in a joint venture with UBM Development Deutschland GmbH.
